PodCamp post-factum*
September 11th, 2006 by Doug
Topaz Partners and Podcast Ready were proud to be sponsors of this past weekend’s successful PodCamp. I did not live-blog or take pictures or video, but there were plenty who did, and the best place to start for links is here.
A few notes and random thoughts:
A big thank you to the organizers of the event, several of whom spent a generous amount of their busy time with me (Two minutes is usually more than enough time with me). These people included:
Chris Brogan
Christopher Penn
Steve Garfield
Bryan Person
Adam Weiss
“Sooz”
These people were very patient and incessantly thankful to Topaz and Russell Holliman of Podcast Ready– but they were doing all of the work.
I’m sure I have missed others, sorry.
Due to my own outside obligations I had to be choosy about what sessions I attended (Two standouts: Henry Houh of Podzinger gave a very interesting peek under the hood of the Podzinger engine, and my colleague Christina Carlson attended Larry Lawfer and Chris MacDonald’s talk on corporate podcasting, a topic dear to our hearts.
The party at Grand Canal near North Station–lots of fun.
Most important to any conference like this was walking the halls (and making our way through Grand Canal) and striking up conversations, some brief, others lengthy, with Friends of Topaz old and new (so if you are an old friend, that makes you an “Old FoT”), in addition to those mentioned above:
Eric Skiff of FeltUp TV — Puppets!
Greg Narain — social media entrepreneur, and a great friend of the Social Media Club
Larry Lawfer of YourStorys– Topaz friend and booster– thanks!
Bob Lyons and Tony “Morning Stories” Kahn of WGBH, and Chris Lydon of OpenSource — for me, a blast from my radio past, and some of the earliest MSM embracers of podcasting.
Andrew Baron, Joanne Colan, Ellie Rountree, and Sherng-Lee Huang of Rocketboom– nice to finally meet you all.
Amanda Congdon — glad to see she is apparently keeping her fingers in podcasting. She’s got a new gig, but can’t say where yet…
Jeff Pulver — Godfather of Von, and the most popular man at the bar for at least two rounds of drinks (probably more, memory’s a little fuzzy). VON is happening right now in Boston (Sept. 11 – 14).
Jay Fitzgerald of the Boston Herald. Sorry I missed you, but glad you could come.
I’m sure I missed or forgot people, and I wasn’t even there for all of PodCamp!
*I never use “Post-Mortem” — I always marvelled at the fact that people hold “post-mortem” meetings after a successful event. Nobody died, people! So, post-factum it is– pass it on.

Hey Doug,
I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to catch up with you at PodCamp. Tony had mentioned you were working with Russell so I was able to talk you guys up on For Immediate Release #169.

Doug -
We thank profusely because without our sponsors’ help, we would have all been sitting in a parking lot somewhere – so thank you!
Parking lots are tough on the backside after a few hours…

Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
You’re thanking US?
Thank YOU. Without your attendance (even threading it in with your life), there is no PodCamp. You, as an attendee/participant. That’s first.
But also without the support of Topaz and Podcast Ready, there’s no PodCamp, no Saturday dinner, no opportunity to bring these great people together for this fine event.
You’re in our hall of heroes (you and Topaz/Podcast Ready). This meant a lot to the organizers of PodCamp Boston, and we’ll remember our friends next year.

Chris and Christopher, you make it so easy to fish for compliments
I call a truce in all this nice-talk before we make our readers gag.
John,
I heard the show (a week behind in listening). I hadn’t realized my email to Shel would be read on the show, so I’m glad I wrote it the way I did- and that you were co-hosting this week to tell Shel more about Podcast Ready.
FIR #169 can be heard here.

It was great to meet you and get to chat at Grand Canal! I don’t think we’ll ever be able to thank you enough as a community for supporting podcamp in the way you did and also being part of the event!

Doug:
A pleasure to meet you over the weekend, both at the Berkman Center event on Friday night and then on Saturday.
The organizers help put the event in place, but it was the passionate participants like you that made PodCamp Boston a success, just as Chris Brogan said. Thank you!
Thought you might want to check out Episode No. 171 of For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report.
I spent some talking talking with Neville Hobson about PodCamp, and I mention you in there as well. I do apologize for flubbing the pronunciation of your last name — I never actually heard it said correctly.
A shame you’re not in your old location, which was just down the road from me. I hope we can still continue the conversation that was started this past weekend.
