Boston Social Media Club – How to get involved
November 16th, 2006 by Todd Van Hoosear
I just sent this note around to Boston SMC folks (stuff in bold is updated or new–I merged a couple emails to make this):
It’s two weeks later, and I’m still getting great feedback from attendees of our inaugural Social Media Club event–thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to the Colonnade! For those of you who couldn’t make it, don’t despair–this is all about social media, after all. We’ve set up an online community to share news, plan future events, discuss issues and just plain keep in touch: please bookmark www.socialmediaboston.org.
The site offers a blog with all the latest chapter and highlights of national Social Media Club news (the RSS feed for your aggregator is http://socialmediaboston.org/wp-rss.php), a great forum to promote discussion of social media topics, a link to the group wiki, and even a chat feature that can be used as an event backchannel, etc. (see the sidebar).
I’ve had a large number of folks step forward and offer to help plan future events and provide other support as well. There are three ways you can get involved:
1. BECOME A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA CLUB
The Social Media Club was formed to promote social media literacy, best practices and ethics and standards. To drive these efforts, we need your help at the national level. Visit the membership page to find out how you or your organization can become an official Co-Founder of the club (or how to contribute in other ways).
2. JOIN THE DISCUSSION ON THE EVENT PLANNING FORUM
The best way to get active at the local level is to help kickstart discussions on Boston’s Event Planning forum (http://www.socialmediaboston.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=1). While you’re at it, start a discussion in one of the other forums. (To post on the forums, you’ll need to set up an account. Visit the registration page to get set up.)
3. SPONSOR AN UPCOMING LOCAL EVENT
The Boston group is looking for corporate sponsors for upcoming events–folks willing to help support future events by providing the venue and perhaps refreshments and possibly snacks. Contact me at toddv@topazpartners.com or drop a note in the forums if you’d like to help out in this manner (and don’t forget the corporate membership option).
We had originally planned on a December meeting, but I believe the month is just too busy to try and get folks together in a room somewhere. But that doesn’t rule out an online event–give us your input on the forum. So I’ll see you online, and at our next F2F event, probably in the January timeframe (don’t want to wait too long, as things happen fast in the social media world).
Thank you again for all your interest and enthusiasm!
