Walking the walk

It’s encouraging to see the PR community focus its attention on blogging and other forms of social media — and to see so many practitioners and PR firms talk about the new services and in-house experts that address this area. But what we need are more examples of how all this is actually being put to use on behalf of the business community.

We’ve found that there’s still a lot more promise than there is actual progress — progress in terms of tangible examples of social media in action. This is, however, rapidly changing — we just put out a press release with some interesting statistics.

One of the teams at Topaz offers up an excellent example of how this “remix culture” technology can be applied to a business — it’s around our work for The Scuderi Group, a small but very interesting company in western Massachusetts that’s beginning to shake up the world of engine design.

As you can imagine, breaking through the established automotive community is a tall order for the PR team supporting these folks, but with the an effort combining traditional PR and an array of “buzz media” strategies, the Topaz team has put The Scuderi Group on the map.

One of the team members just blogged about some recent activity and it got me thinking that it would be worthwhile for others interested in see the team is putting blogs and other forms of online communications to work. Take a moment to check out the Scuderi Air Hybrid blog. Topaz was deeply involved in the strategy, design and implementation of the blog and most of the associated audio and video, and we continue to support this effort.

This is just one example of blogs (and Topaz) at work — I hope to be sharing more in the weeks ahead. And I hope to see other examples from other folks that focus more on progress and less on promise.

    Right, and sadly, thus far, the most well known examples of the business world using social media involves the business world abusing social media, a la Wal-Mart and McDonald’s. The PR industry needs to prove that it can use social media ethically and effectively to benefit clients.

    You might be interested to look at http://dailypainters.com for another (and very different) instance of business via blogging. The site features artwork being sold primarily through blogs as opposed to the expensive gallery route; it is becoming pretty popular.
