Social media and PR — Look how far we’ve come (and we’re not done yet!)
June 6th, 2007 by Tony Sapienza
While it seems everyone and anyone is talking up social media and PR these days, my feeling is we can never get enough — particularly with the pace of change and emergence of new social media opportunities for PR. Not so long ago, many PR folk looked at social media as just another buzzword — or as the domain of those outside of the mainstream PR community.
Eventually, even the most resistant PR practionners came to accept blogs and online forums as a way to reach target audiences. Today, we’re looking at increasingly acceptance of a much broader spectrum a of social media technologies and practices — social networking sites, wikis, RSS feeds, podcasts, photo sharing, video blogs, social bookmarking and virtual worlds. And every month seems to bring new directions — and more importantly, more examples of social media successfully at work in PR.
Later this month, I’ll be part of a conference presented by PRSA Technology Section and the PRSA New York Chapter. I’m amazed by the cross-section of presenters — and the range of topics. It speaks to how far the PR community has come — and much we’re changing. In fact, I’m guessing that by the time this conference kicks off on the morning of June 19, there will be many more new developments for us to focus on.
I plan on posting a recap from the event, but if you’re in NYC on the June 19, I encourage you check it out for yourself.
