Social Media Breakfast 5 (Boston): Why we use Twitter

February 13th, 2008 by Doug

As previewed in the last post, this morning I had the pleasure of being invited to be among the four presenters at the fifth Boston Social Media Breakfast, organized by Bryan Person.

Laura “Pistachio” Fitton, Jim “jstorerj” Storer (of Mzinga, the event’s sponsor), me (”DougH“) and Scott “scottmonty” Monty (from L to R in the phoo below) each spoke to the theme, “How Twitter Has Changed My Life- and Can Change Yours.” In the spirit of Twitter’s brevity, we each got five minutes, and each took different approaches.

In a too-brief recap of the speakers, Scott Monty led with a statement exactly 140 characters long, spoke about Twitter as community and a place to organize events, such as the ongoing “My ooVoo Day” he and his cohorts at crayon are organizing.

I took to heart Bryan’s invitation to use props , and used a ball of “DougH” (below - get it?) to show how Twitter has become a hub connecting everything I do online.

Jim Storer stressed the importance of listening, and the just-as-important concept of Twitter as a river (or as Chris Brogan put it to me, a “stream”) .

Laura, true to form, gave personal testimony on how the Twitter community has helped her personally and professionally since her recent move to Boston.

Following that, we joined all the attendees for a great Q & A session.

One more thing: I also brought a handout I made from a question and responses on the theme “How has Twitter changed your life?” I posed the previous day to the Twitter community.

Thanks again to organizer Bryan Person and sponsor Mzinga for a great event.
