Industry Conferences = Positive Signs for Techies
September 17th, 2008 by Tony Sapienza
I’ve been on a whirlwind tour of tech industry conferences over the past few days — CTIA in SF last week and InterOp and Web2.0 in NYC this week (and yet another, OMMA, just a day or two away). There are a few take-aways: sore feet (the cab situation at the Javits in NYC is brutal), a dead cellphone battery (can’t Motorola get this right) and some very exciting technologies. At CTIA, the buzz was about mobile marketing/advertising and internet mobility. At InterOp (a show I first attended some 20 years ago), there were companies old and new touting advances in security, networking and (again) mobility. And at Web2.0, there were loads of providers of social media products and services. A few years ago, many were predicting the demise of tech trade shows and conferences. And in the aftermath of this week’s Wall Street troubles, many are forecasting dark days for the tech business. But if these three shows are any indication, there’s reason for optimism — including new and exciting technologies, a slew of cool start-ups, and tech veterans sporting a fresh look. I for one am feeling good about the technology industry (but my feet still ache).
