Clear thinking on PR and social media

November 6th, 2008 by Tony Sapienza

I don’t know Margo Mateas, but I like the way she thinks about PR and social media — at least her recent column in PR Tactics, the PRSA monthly publication. Her full piece won’t be available online until Monday, but there was a summary in the most recent print version I received this week — and I thought it deserved a note here. Here are the headlines from her “mini-survival guide”:
- Join the conversation but don’t get lost in it
- Assign staff and educate them about social media
- Stay focused on core competencies
- PR has a permanent place and should work in concert with social media
- Measure the impact of social media before moving forward
This maps against my thinking about PR and social media — and how we approach this at Topaz. It’s a useful guide for any PR person thinking about how to approach what is one of the most exciting developments to hit our profession in years.
