Election Day media irreverance…or irresponsibility

November 6th, 2008 by Tony Sapienza

This week has been full of Election Day reports these past few days, but one of the more humorous developments — or disturbing, depending on your perspective — took place Monday morning on Boston radio station WEEI. The morning drive-time hosts Jerry Callahan and John Dennis, both professed backers of John McCain, joked that only Republicans could vote on Tuesday — Democrats had to wait until Wednesday. Most chuckled (including me), but an hour later an irate listener called in to protest, stating that his father refused a ride to the polls on Tuesday since he, as a Democrat, wasn’t allowed to vote until the following day. Some might contend that this is media irresponsiblity — but others have pointed out that it was clearly done in jest. And besides, if someone took something like this seriously, perhaps they shouldn’t voting.

I heard this as well. While D&C were clearly joking, it was inappropriate. Our ability to vote – and to disagree politically yet still celebrate when all is said and done – is a cherished right, bought and paid for by the blood, sweat, toil and tears of the men and women who fought for our country. To even jokingly imply that the election was on a different day was out out of line. I was honestly surprised they weren’t suspended or fined.
