Texting and the Haitian Relief Effort
January 15th, 2010 by Tony Sapienza
A few days ago, I blogged about the 2010 tech PR trends we spotlighted in a recent Topaz article and release. And while social media was a major focal point, there is another area that I didn’t call out in my blog post — but it’s a topic that has gotten a lot of visibility this week. In the PR Tactics article, we talked about mobile devices emerging as a channel — and product focus — for PR campaigns. But the role mobile communications has played in this week’s Haitian relief effort is having a much greater impact than any prediction we made. According to recent news reports, a texting campaign launched by the Red Cross has already netted more than $8 million in relief fund (up from $1 million yesterday morning). While it’s true mobile will be an important part of our PR lives, texting and mobile devices is fulfilling a far more important role in the lives of the Haitian people this week. Whether through texting, social networks (as Joanna mentions in another blog post) or the old-fashioned ways of giving, let’s all lend our support to a nation experiencing unimaginable devastation and loss.
