PRobecast #87: PR Skills, Tech in Relationships and More!

September 2nd, 2010 by Alison Raymond

In this week’s loosely edited PRobecast, Alison Raymond, Sarah Thomas and Renatta Siewert talk about social media, must haves for PR professionals, technology as a 3rd party and more. Here are the issues we covered:

What Happens when Social Media Attacks – While social media is a great way for businesses – small and large – to market themselves at very low costs, businesses still need to be aware of the backlash that can happen. While the business itself can market the brand via social media channels, it also offers a platform for angry customers to voice their concern about issues.

MySpace soon will allow users to sync to Facebook – Facebook users may now be able to see what their friends are doing on MySpace with a new feature on MySpace that allows people to sync to their Facebook page. This is an interesting move by MySpace since Facebook was seen as their main competitor.

In PR which is More Important: People or Writing Skills? – We recently had a very good comment from one of our fans on facebook. She asked,”One PR professional said that PR is all about writing skills, and people skills are secondary. Which skills are more important in your opinion?” What are your thoughts?

Girl Throwing Puppies in a River Causes a Stir on the Web – There was a video taken of a girl throwing puppies in a river and it’s caused a huge uproar on several social media sites, with people very upset over her actions. Some people are posting the identity of the girl, and some of the system administrators are telling the users not to ID the girl because it’s essentially “internet lynching” – meaning people are going to go after her. What are your thoughts? Are people right to ID her? Should her identity stay hidden?

The 3rd Party in Long Term Relationships, Tech – Tech gadgets have made long distant relationships easier. An article in the Globe, talked about how like it or not there is always a 3rd party involved in their relationship: technology. Even at work, you no longer have to write letters via snail mail to get in touch with people. Between email, Skype, IM and phones – people are much more accessible.

Wynn Bans Paris – The Wynn Resorts has banned Paris Hilton from the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore following their arrests in a vehicle that “reeked of marijuana.” Seeing that Paris was once, and maybe still is an “It” girl this is a big move on the Wynn’s side.

In this week’s PRobecast PR Power Ranking – where we votes on what story did the best job PR-wise. We couldn’t decide – it was a three way tie between MySpace, Ann Taylor and the Wynn Resorts.

Help us decide!
