Google vs. Facebook

November 19th, 2010 by esiff

A few posts ago I discussed “Titan,” Facebook’s latest attempt at complete social media dominance by integrating it with instant messaging and email, which subsequently inspired some bloggers to dub it the “Gmail Killer.” I also mentioned that Facebook came out with their own version of Groupon, cleverly titled Facebook Deals, which was also portrayed in the blogosphere as a potential threat to the daily deal giant. Google, it seems, has taken a different approach to the increasingly popular daily deal market, and it was reported this morning that Google may try to acquire Groupon for an estimated $3 billion!

According to Bloomberg:

“Google and Groupon have held talks about an acquisition, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous because the discussions are private. Groupon may take until the end of the year to decide whether to make a deal with Google, said one of the people. Groupon earlier held failed negotiations with Yahoo! Inc. and may not clinch a deal with Google, the people said.” (read more)

It’s clear that there is a major conflict between Apple and Google (Android), Google also tried (and failed) to attack Facebook with Google Buzz and now it seems to be responding to Facebook Deals by trying to acquire Groupon….

Is Google engaged in a two-front war? More importantly, is it one they can win?

Google, Facebook – and Amazon, oh, and don’t forget Yahoo. And AOL is trying to make a comeback. Just saw a few headlines today that Amazon is in talks to invest $100M in Living Social. Also this week, Yahoo announced plans for its own daily deal/Group buying aggregation/affiliate initiative. This space keeps getting hotter and wilder by the minute.
